The Most Important Question That You Should Ask God Right Now
I had a blog post on a different topic mostly written for today. But I threw it out because something much more important has come into my heart. This new post will be short and to the point — and you’ll be able to start using what you learn here right away.
There’s something you need to know from God. You need to know the answer to this question:
How does God feel about you even when you are at your worst?
You see…
Our natural human reaction to messing up is to try to get our act together before we go to God for blessing.
And when we do get into the feeling of God’s blessing for us, our natural human tendency is to
- Let that blessing go to the “least messed up” parts of ourselves—and to
- Give advice and guidance to the parts that have really blown it.
That means that when people are “in their blessing” for themselves, they’ll tell the most discouraged parts of themselves some variation of “you just need to try harder, and then you’ll be okay.”
But when you are discouraged and broken, you don’t need advice—because you’re too discouraged to act on it, anyway.
What you need, when you are most broken, most messed-up, and most ashamed, is love. There’s one question that will bring that love to the forefront of your consciousness. And that question always starts with: “How does God feel about you, even when [you are at your worst]?“
I’ve found that when I ask people variations of that question, it inevitably takes them to a deeper experience of God’s love and compassion for every part of themselves. And it will work for you, too.
Ask yourself these questions, and let yourself really feel your best sense of the truth of the answers:
- How does God feel about you even when your ‘doing your best’ is pretty terrible?
- How does God feel about you even when you’ve acted out?
- How does God feel about you even when you’ve messed up?
- How does God feel about you even when you’re feeling broken?
- How does God feel about you even when you’ve given up?
- How does God feel about you even when you don’t have what it takes to go back to Him?
No fair going to “God is disappointed,” or “It breaks God’s heart.”
Look deeper than that, beyond that, to how God feels about you even if you aren’t doing what He wants you to do. Look to the love He has for the most broken part of you.
How God feels about you when you are doing great and everything is going your way is not going to revolutionize your life. The important question is, how does God feel about you even when you are at your worst?
The more you can dwell in the answer to that question, the more you will live in His blessing, and pour that blessing out to the world.
